Environmental Conditions for Stem Growth

The 3x3 farmland grid displaying hydration weights and growth speed formulas.

A stem grows only when the light level at the stem is 9 or higher. A stem has eight growth stages, from age 0 to age 7. A fully grown stem places its fruit on one random side, and only when that side is air and the block below it can support the fruit.

The Growth Speed Formula

Each random tick, a stem advances with a chance of one in (25 divided by its growth speed, rounded down, plus one).

The growth speed starts at 1 and adds the farmland under the stem: 1 for dry farmland and 3 for wet farmland. Each of the eight farmland blocks around the one under the stem adds a quarter of that value: 0.25 when dry and 0.75 when wet. The growth speed is halved when the same plant grows on both a north-south side and an east-west side, or on a diagonal.

Worked Arithmetic Examples

Example 1: Dry Ground With Dry Neighbours

Consider an example with a dry base block surrounded by eight dry neighbours and no penalty.

  1. The base speed starts at 1.
  2. The dry base block adds 1.
  3. Eight dry neighbouring blocks each contribute 0.25, adding 2.0 in total.
  4. The resulting total speed equals 1 + 1 + 2 = 4.
  5. Applying the formula gives 25 / 4 = 6.25, rounded down to 6.
  6. Adding 1 yields an advance chance of 1 in 7 per attempt.

Example 2: Hydrated Ground With Wet Neighbours

Consider an example with a wet base block surrounded by eight wet neighbours and no penalty.

  1. The base speed starts at 1.
  2. The wet base block adds 3.
  3. Eight wet neighbouring blocks each contribute 0.75, adding 6.0 in total.
  4. The resulting total speed equals 1 + 3 + 6 = 10.
  5. Applying the formula gives 25 / 10 = 2.5, rounded down to 2.
  6. Adding 1 yields an advance chance of 1 in 3 per attempt.

Example 3: Hydrated Ground With Neighbour Penalty

Consider an optimal setup affected by a neighbouring plant penalty.

  1. Starting from the unpenalized speed of 10, the speed is halved to 5.
  2. Applying the formula gives 25 / 5 = 5, rounded down to 5.
  3. Adding 1 yields an advance chance of 1 in 6 per attempt.
